WORDSMITH
I’m thrilled you’re here, especially if you’re on the hunt for your next great fiction read!
With a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a master’s in Fiction Writing, I have dedicated my career to weaving compelling stories and sharing insights. My journey began as a sports journalist at a major metropolitan newspaper, where I was honored to win a Hearst National Journalism Award and two Associated Press awards for my reporting.
I’m proud to say that my work has gained some international recognition along the way. You might have seen me in PEOPLE magazine, on PEOPLE TV, or even on FOX TV and NPR. My writing has also appeared in places like The Plain Dealer and Thrive Global. I’m also excited to share that some of my books have became #1 Amazon Bestsellers!
I’m also excited to share my debut novel, Small as a Mustard Seed, which received a grant from the Weisman Fund and was the Grand Prize Winner in the Writer's Digest International Book Awards. It also earned a Silver Medal for Literary Fiction from the Military Writers Society of America! The novel was also featured in Writer's Digest magazine, NPR, the Today Show, among other media.
I’ve had the privilege of participating in artist residencies at Ragdale and Hedgebrook, which have enriched my writing journey. Most recently, I completed a gripping novel that delves into the complexities of WWII Germany, offering a haunting and intimate perspective through the eyes of those who lived it.
Thank you for joining me on this creative adventure—I can’t wait to share more with you!

MY CREED
HOW I DO MY BEST TO LIVE MY LIFE

TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY SURVIVOR

Let’s explore the transformative power of storytelling together.
My journey as a writer spans over four decades, during which I have immersed myself in the art of crafting fiction. Several years ago, my life changed dramatically when I was hit head-on by a drunk driver, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. This experience brought significant physical and cognitive challenges, testing my resilience and determination.
Navigating the complexities of recovery reaffirmed my long-held belief that storytelling possesses a unique power to heal. I have always embraced writing as a sanctuary —a means to confront my limitations and explore new perspectives. Through fiction, I have found a profound outlet for expression that not only allows me to share my experiences but also helps me regain my strength and sense of self.
With a rich background in fiction, I’ve learned that stories have the capacity to connect us and illuminate the human experience. Each tale I write reflects my understanding of resilience, compassion, and the intricate nature of life. I believe that every story holds the potential to resonate deeply with readers, and I am devoted to weaving narratives that capture the essence of our shared humanity.
As I continue to write, I invite you to join me on this exploration of the written word and the power of fiction. Together, let’s celebrate the transformative journey that storytelling offers.
READER REVIEWS
An intense and heartbreaking story of the fallout of war.
Publisher's Weekly
A story that will run you through an emotional marathon at a sprinter’s pace . . . the most powerful novel I’ve read in many years . . . one of the most significant reading experiences I’ve ever had.
Tom Clementson, Kindle Book Reviews
Small as a Mustard Seed is a momentum building, emotional rollercoaster read. Shelli Johnson’s impressive ability to make her main character, Ann Marie, so credible led to my believing that I was reading an autobiography.
Bob Doerr, Military Writer's Society Of America
A superbly crafted and reader engaging novel . . . a terrific read from first page to last.
Midwest Book Review
The language and tone rich with emotional weight . . . intensifies the heartbreaking events that occur.
Writer's Digest
This book tells a great story of friendship and bravery. It also teaches kids that it is important to express how we are feeling and not keep it bottled up . . . children will feel inspired by Bigsby and his ability to make new friends and will take that lesson into their lives.
Little Helpers in Life
This book is great for my three-year-old because, as the fourth child, he is often overwhelmed with all the busyness of our family and has been heard to say, "Leave me alone." But, just like the snowman, he doesn't mean it. This book gave me ways to talk to him about his confusing emotions. He's already asked me to read it again!

This book is beautifully illustrated and it speaks at a level children will understand about friendship as well as finding your voice to share with others about how you feel. It is humorous (I love the little dog with the sticks! So funny!) but it also touches you on a more deeper level. A teacher's addition to the classroom for sure!

Loved this book! Will definitely read it to all my young nieces and nephews. Will probably purchase a few more copies to give as gifts. Shelli Johnson has a gift that cannot be ignored!
